4 Reasons Facebook Timeline Isn’t Working For Your Business
Do you want to know why the new Facebook timeline isn’t working for your business? Not sure why your fans are not interacting on your page despite posting at different times? Here are 4 reasons and I will share solutions for you:
1. Facebook Edgerank
EdgeRank is an algorithm developed by Facebook to govern what is displayed (and how high) on the News Feed. This score represents how people interact with your content on Facebook whether they like, comment and how often with your status updates, photos or videos. The score is made up of elements called Affinity, Weight, and Time Decay as this picture shows from the Egderank blog:
Affinity is built by repeat interactions with your brand. If someone likes or comments on your content often, your page will show in their newsfeed often.
Weight refers to certain actions on Facebook that carry more weight such as commenting has a higher ranking than liking content.
Time Decay refers to how long your photo, update or video has been alive; the older it is the less value it has. If you receive a large number of comments and likes within the 1st hour, your update will last longer in the newsfeed.
SOLUTION: Check your page insights to find out which posts obtain the most engagement. Take note of the day of the week and time to determine the best days and times for your audience. Vary your content and posting times as well as continue to review your insight stats.
2. 90% of Your Fans Are Lurkers
Even if some of your fans don’t see your content anymore, there may be some that see your content but just don’t interact with your page, also known as lurkers. It could be because it may not interest them or something else in the newsfeed has caught their attention.
SOLUTION: The newsfeed moves fast so it’s important to provide eye catching photos, attention grabbing headlines and mesmerizing videos. It’s also important to remember that less is more. Studies have shown that more engagement is seen with status updates of 80 characters or less. Most people don’t want to take the time to read long, drawn out text on Facebook. This also applies to videos. People are more likely to view a 1-2 minute video in length with a catchy title than one that shows to be 5 minutes long.
3. Lack of Facebook Ad Usage
I believe Facebook Ads are the best way to grow your page and increase engagement. There are so many different ways to promote your page on Facebook. You can feature a certain post on your page or you can request more likes by targeting fans of other relevant & related pages.
Here is post that I wrote which gives you a great way to increase your fan base and engagement. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, be sure to check out an article that I wrote for Social Media Examiner on cost effective Facebook ads.
SOLUTION: Try out different Facebook ads and test which photos and verbiage garners the most likes and engagement for your page. Utilizing Facebook advertising is the best solution to grow a stagnant page.
4. No Engagement Strategy
Since Edgerank plays such a huge role in who sees your content on Facebook, an engagement stategy is vital for your business. The time decay factor of the algorithm has a shorter time span for your posts so now posting more often in one day is often necessary.
Again, you will want to track your engagement strategy by viewing your page insights. Your engagement strategy will consist of finding what your audience likes to interact with most on your page. It could be engaging videos, snazzy photos or jaw dropping updates.
SOLUTION: The new milestone feature is a great way to feature your brand. If you were a speaker at an event, you can add that as a milestone and tag the people that you enjoyed meeting there. This can bring engagement of remembering the time you experienced together. This also works for creating a milestone for closing escrow for a client.
Let me know of any other creative ways to increase your fans and engagement on your Facebook page. We would be happy to hear about them in the comments below, so strike up the conversation!

7 Year Old Girl Scout Sold 353 Cookies in 2 Weeks & What That Means In Your Business
Many people thought this story would be about my daughter and although she is a fiesty rockstar, this is about another fiery little red-haired gal that is in my daughter’s girl scout troop. We all know that this gal will eventually be a powerhouse CEO or a super Real Estate mogul one day.
So you would think that her parents took her girl scout brochure to their workplace & sold like crazy for her…
**WRONG**
She took the majority of the initiative by herself with her sales. Here are the key components to her success and how it relates to your business.
Innovative New Product

There is an innovative new cookie flavor that she raved about after she warmly said hello to every person she came into contact with in her world. Think through your business. Are you staying on the cutting edge? What products are out there that can bring in more business for you? Align yourself with top producers in your niche and find out what systems are working for them or create a product yourself and fill in the void for your area of expertise.
Utilize Every Opportunity
I appreciate her intense focus by using every opportunity to make a sale. She asked her favorite teachers, she asked her parents to join her as she asked her neighbors. She recently moved to a new neighborhood but she didn’t let that obstacle stop her. What local farming systems do you have in place to generate leads? Do you have a good stay in touch system with your past clients? Are you attending local events in your community?
Actually most of her sales came from previous customers.
Massive Exposure

Girl Scouts sure has come a long way since I was a scout. Now there is an online system for the girls to keep track of their goals and to stay in contact with their past customers. Their email contact system is amazing with a promise to purchase option along with a great follow-up system. This broadens her reach and an email marketing system can do the same for your business.
Social media is another amazing channel that can broaden your reach. Are you using social media in the best way for your particular market that brings massive exposure? Are you aligning yourself with best practices and mentors that bring results? Remember this 7 year old girl as you go about your day:
- Stay Focused
- Stay Innovative
- Stay Connected
as you fly to the top in your business. I am signing off now to be a superwoman in my world but let me know in the comments in what ways you can be like this 7 year old gal.

7 Tips To Market Your Real Estate Business with Social Media in 30 min / Day
I know your story…As a real estate or mortgage professional you just don’t have the time to deal with social media. I hear this every day – in fact I’m receiving many requests to start a company that manages social media profiles specifically for real estate and mortgage professionals.
Here are 7 Tips To Market Your Real Estate Business with Social Media in 30 Minutes / Day
Tip #1 Find Your Clients Favorite Social Media Sites
As you attend events or meet new clients be sure to look them up on social networks to connect with them. This will allow you to maintain an online relationship with them and to get to know you better as well.
Tip #2 Choose Your Specific Social Media Network(s)

The mistake that most people make is they try to be everywhere at once. Although it is a great strategy to have multiple social media profiles, it is best to focus on 1 or 2 networks at first and gradually add more as time permits. This helps you to gain authority and trust in one area at time.
Tip #3 Become Facebook Fans of Pages in Your Niche
Yes I mean hit the ‘LIKE’ buttons for active & current Facebook pages that are related to your particular expertise such as First Time Homebuyers or Loan Refinance for example. Simply do a Facebook search for pages and quickly review those pages that are active and current and are in your target market. This will set you up to target these pages when you initiate your Facebook Advertising campaign.
Tip #4 Discover Local Leads Using Twitter
Search for questions in your community by doing a search with the name of your city and certain keywords. You can narrow down your search by adding words such as “home buying”, or “tired of renting” or “excited to move in” to reach out to people by answering questions that they may have. This same strategy can be used with LinkedIn as well in the Answers section.
Tip #5 Make Your Business Updates Interesting & Fun For Comments
Here is an update that I posted and received many comments and questions,
“Just walked into an open house with 7 bedrooms and an elevator! Any takers?”
or
“Just hosted a loan webinar with 200 registrants! Were you there? Why not?”
You want to create an atmosphere of conversation and engagement to stay on top of mind when your services are needed. Your goal is to be viewed as their trusted advisor.
Tip #6 Celebrate Birthdays
I’ve heard many people share that they didn’t receive any birthday wishes in person but had tons of people share their sentiments on Facebook. It’s always nice to take it one step further by also saying Happy Birthday to the same person on different networks like Facebook & Twitter for example. People don’t care about how much you know until you share how much you care.
Tip #7 Comment and Interact with Your Clients on Social Networks
There are many lurkers on social networks with not much interaction. Go ahead and join in on the conversation. Celebrate their victories and offer condolances as you see them in your newsfeed. I have had many people that I haven’t met in person tell me online that they feel like I am their sister. It just makes it that much more natural to do business with them.
Here is a great article that shares

HOW TO: Give Your Heart At BlogWorld Expo LA
Here is my review of Blog World Expo 2010. Be sure to register for the 1st ever

What is the one thing that surprised you while you were at Blog World Expo 2010? For me, it was the few people that actually came to the microphone during the question part of the program and said,
“First off, I want to give a personal plug about myself, check out my website blah, blah, blah…”
Really? How many times do we have to share that it’s not about you? I thought I would share how to give your heart at events such as these. Then I will share my experience and a few golden nuggets of wisdom from various sessions.
- Ask questions that others want to know as well – this creates an instant community after you ask the question as people will say to you, “I had that same exact question, thank you for asking.”
- Tweet interesting facts from the sessions – I know this seems hard to do but you can quickly take down notes, then during a time when you know you can steal some time to tweet, DO IT! The presenters appreciate your instant feedback instead of waiting for a survey that may never get back to them.
- Ask people deeper questions about their business or blog – Really make an effort get to know the other person and make them feel special even if they aren’t a presenter.
- Make an effort to leave a comment on all of their blogs – It doesn’t matter if they are not in your niche. Let them know that you had a blast getting to know them. I have already started this but I still have more business cards to get through.
- Connect with them on social media networks – it’s one thing to meet for a weekend. It’s a whole different relationship when you can keep up with them through out the year and have a reunion at Blog World Expo 2011.
I went to several different sessions but I will only mention the ones that had an incredible impact on me:
How To Run a Successful Webinar Business From Your Blog
by Lewis Howes
If you haven’t heard Lewis’ story, you have to connect with him and find out how he started out with becoming Mr. LinkedIn and author to Magnetic Webinars.
My husband has been involved with webinars for the past year but I’m just getting started with utilizing them in my particular market.
Lewis gave us all some great strategies including the psychology of running webinars:
- What are your clients pain points? Help them..
- What are their needs? Serve them..
- Be sure to use lots of images which are more compelling and creates more emotion
10 min before the webinar let people know that you are giving away a free report or some other giveaway at the end. This provides them incentive to stay for the whole webinar.
Types of Webinars:
- Free Webinar
- Paid Webinar
- Membership Webinar
- Free with a pitch webinar
Send out webinar invite 4 days prior to event to keep it top of mind.
- Email your list with a killer headline. Later on that day email w/a different headline to those who didn’t open the email.
- Promote via social media
- Send email reminder mentioning the bonus
- Email to those who didn’t open the reminder email & post on social media networks again
Great stuff! I will be doing more with recorded webinars but will incorporate live ones as well.
Building An Irresistible Private Membership Community
by Lara Kulpa, Chris Garret, Patrick O’Keefe
Great insights for membership communities
- Have Boundaries & Guidelines
- Promote Positivity
- Build a sense of community
Various Membership / Forum Platforms:
- Wishlist
- Amember
- vBulletin
The Brand of YOU: How to Build A Profitable Social Media Business
by Mari Smith
Everyone knows that Mari Smith is all about the turquoise & bling! I took this snap shot of her table at her session.
She has blazed the trail as The Queen of Facebook & Twitter. She does an incredible job of making people feel special and unique.
She shared so much inspiring information that I had to write really fast to keep up with my notes.
Brand = the experience your customers have with you
Branding = what you do to have people become aware of your brand
- Be Bold & Unique
- Stand Out with Conviction
- Be Confident
- Live a Life of Excellence
- Don’t Copy Others – Be Innovative
- Always Use People’s First Names
- Write out 100 tips in your niche – tweet them or make a pdf as a free ebook
- Have a support team of mentors, advisors, staff
There were several other sessions and keynotes that I attended but I wanted to take this time to share a little about the parties and list the blogs of the people that I met at Blog World Expo 2010.
Liquid Pool Lounge Party, Aria Hotel
The pool lounge party was packed and although the music was decent, there was no room to dance. I’m a dance-a-holic so not having a dance floor was a big no-no in my book. I looked for my bud Nicole Nicolay so we could rock the house with our hubbies but she was pulled away for an interview. She is just so famous!
The highlight was when some random guy took off his clothes (he spared us by leaving on his underwear and showing his hairy, chubby belly) and jumped in the pool. My first thought was, “Ok, who else is going to follow him?” I guess no one else wanted to match his boldness as he was the only one to take a dip.
Haze Night Club Party, Aria Hotel
So I have a dance floor at this place and LOTS of it!! I had a great time dancing alongside Mari Smith as tall gals we definitely stood out!
The club was open to only Blog World attendees from 8 pm to 10 pm and the music was just ok during that time. The doors were open to the public at 10 pm and then the music started to really get pumping but WAIT!!! We no longer had any available seating.
All of the seating turned into VIP areas only.
My smokin’ hot heels with silver metal spikes were starting to burn up my feet and I had no option to sit down and rest?? What? Are you kidding me?
I still was able to get my boogey-on but not as long as my usual dance-a-holic self. I guess I should have bought the flip flops that the club had for sale for all the gals with heels.
I’ll make sure to bring my flip flops to Blog World Expo 2011. Vegas or bust baby!! <<<— (update Blog World Expo will be in LA this year!!)
Roll Call of Friends & Their Blogs
The new connections that I made were phenomenal so I had to share the love here:
Annett Davis a professional beach volleyball player writing about fit moms, fit kids
Heather Greenwood Davis shares her journey of travelling around the world with her family
Kristi Hines – social media enthusiast & internet marketer
Elijah Young – small business start up consultant
Kristi Trimmer – freelance editor and social media consultant
Marcie Hill – journalist & social media strategist
Desiree Peeples – podcaster and web TV host
Eleanor Marks Prior – your go to girl for all of your virtual needs
Are Morch – social media experience advisor
Cindy King – cross cultural and social media strategist for international business
Amy Porterfield – social media consultant and regular contributor to Social Media Examiner
Mike Stelzner – founder of Social Media Examiner
*UPDATE* Since then, I’ve had lunch with some of the people listed here, someone had me in their home, and also exchanged business network training with another person. We have also kept in contact over the year. There is so much value in attending events like this.
Let us know…
Let us know your favorite memories from Blog World Expo 2010 in the comments below. Blog World Expo 2011 can’t come fast enough…Remember… let’s leave the ”it’s all about me” attitude at home and come to give your heart.

12 Essential iPad Apps For Your Small Business
Have you considered purchasing an iPad for your small business? Or does it seem like another toy to add to your wishlist that may or may not add value to your business?

I am very excited to share that Social Media Examiner is the reason that I was able to purchase my iPad in November 2010 by selling tickets to Facebook Success Summit via my blog. Since then, I have been avidly reviewing different apps for my business as well as collaborating with other colleagues and decided to share our findings with you.
12 Essential iPad Apps For Your Small Business
KeyNote
($9.99) is the powerful presentation app from iWork, completely reworked for iPad and Multi-Touch. So you can do everything on iPad with a tap or drag of your finger — from creating your first slide to presenting your work.
Present to a small group right on your iPad and you’ll be a tough act to follow. Tap to play, or swipe to move forward or backward through slides. Want to present to a larger group? Use the optional iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter to connect your iPad to a TV, monitor, projector, or LCD display.

Numbers
($9.99) is the most powerful spreadsheet app designed to work with iPad and Multi-Touch technology. With a few taps, you can create tables and charts, add photos and graphics, and enter and edit data.
With Numbers on iPad, you can open Numbers and Microsoft Excel files. It works the other way around, too. The spreadsheets you create in Numbers on your iPad can be sent as Numbers files, Excel files, or PDF documents. That way, whether you use a Mac or PC, you always have the flexibility to view and edit the spreadsheets you need right from your iPad.

Pages
($9.99) combines robust writing and advanced layout tools with the simplicity of Multi-Touch. So you can create all kinds of documents — including newsletters, reports, brochures, and flyers — using just your fingers.
With Pages on iPad, you can open Pages and Microsoft Word files. And it works the other way around, too. The documents you create in Pages on your iPad can be sent as Pages files, Word files, or PDF documents. That way, whether you use a Mac or PC, you always have the flexibility to view and edit the files you need right from your iPad.

Things
($19.99) is a beautifully focused and amazingly intuitive task manager. Other TO DO applications either oversimplify or are too difficult to use. Things instead offers the perfect balance between ease of use and powerful features.
Effortlessly manage to-do’s, notes, due dates and projects. A smart today list and the scheduling feature allows you to work as effectively as possible – every day.

Delivery Status Touch
($4.99) helps you track all of your packages, so you always know when they’re going to arrive. It supports more than 25 services, including UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, TNT, and many more. You can also track orders from Amazon, Apple, and Google Checkout even before they ship.

Dropbox
(Free) is the easiest way to sync and share your files online and across computers. View photos, videos, documents and presentations in your Dropbox on the go. Store your favorite files to download them for fast, offline viewing. This app requires a Dropbox account. If you don’t have one, the app allows you to create a free account.

Sign-N-Send
($1.99) Signing documents has never been easier! Sign any PDF and Microsoft Office document straight from your iPad and send it via e-mail. Do you ever receive documents as email attachments that require you to fill out information or require your signature? Before Sign-N-Send, this was a laborious process. First you had to find a way to print them out, then fill out the documents, and then re-scan or fax them back. Simply touch and hold down on any PDF or MS Office document and select open in Sign-N-Send.

(Free) is a fast, beautiful way to flip through business news, photos and updates of your colleagues sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader and Flickr. View your social media in a magazine layout that is easy to scan and read. Customize your Flipboard with your favorite people, lists, groups and blogs.

Hootsuite
(Free) is the perfect social media tool for multiple Twitter accounts, Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare. This app allows you to send and schedule updates to all of the above mentioned social media sites as well as track click stats and set up tracking columns to monitor keywords, #hashtags, and lists.

Friendly For Facebook
(Free) a beautiful way to experience Facebook for your iPad by chatting with your online friends as well as managing your Facebook page. If you have multiple iPad users, Friendly for Facebook allows you easily switch between multiple Facebook accounts.

WordPress
(Free) It’s easy to manage your business blog from your iPad. You can moderate comments, create or edit posts and pages, and add images or videos with ease. Just be sure your blog is running 2.9.2 or higher.

Analytics HD
($6.99) is the premier app for Google Analytics. See charts and reports like you’ve never seen them before, and share them in a meeting with full screen charts. Analytics HD brings all your important stats in a simple and efficient interface, faster and easier than checking Google Analytics from your browser.
View more reports and data than any other Analytics app with a secure connection directly to Google. The now famous “Today” report that everyone wishes Google offered, and a “Yesterday” report.

Be sure to search for specific apps in your particular niche to add to your iPad. For example: Mortgage Calculator, Zillow and Houzz are just a few apps for my niche. I will have a follow up post with more details on iPad apps specifically for mortgage and real estate. NOW LIVE 10 Rockin’ Real Estate iPad Apps.
It is also a great idea to reach out to your colleagues who have iPads as well in order to discover more apps that will aid you in being more productive in your business.
